Widespread Museum

October 28, 2011

Designed by Pietro da Cortona and revised by Carlo Rainaldi, the Duomo is Ronciglione’s largest church. It was built between 1630 and 1695, has a stone dome hand decorated by master stonecutters and is 36 meters high. This fact caused it to receive much criticism in the past because since Ronciglione is not very far away from the home of the Pope, it was forbidden to build domes which could “compete” with St. Peter’s Dome. In fact this criticism slowed down the construction work and required a great effort by the people of Ronciglione and the community working on the dome. The inside of the Duomo has three naves giving a sense of breadth and majesty enriched by the decorations inside the dome and several splendid frescoes dating back to the 15th century. The recent restoration work which was completed in 2006 brought the Duomo back to its past and lustre and beauty.
